It is now January 1918.
We last saw Lt. Colonel William Knox in London surprised by the sudden appearance of his fiancée, Hattie MacDonagh, all the way from New York.
Having recently escaped from being behind German lines in Belgium, William was feeling bemused and tired by events. The stalemate of the Western Front promised no change, as everyone realised that there was little likelihood of a sudden victory.
Having spent so long simply surviving, his spying activities seemed inconsequential to him. However, on his safe arrival back in England, he was informed by his superiors that he had been instrumental in assisting the code-breakers in making real headway at confounding their German adversaries by breaking their codes to the U Boats.
The tide was turning, they said. The new, improved convoy system with the added bonus of intercepted wireless messages meant the U Boat menace was less effective and more and more ships were getting through. The German policy of starving Britain into submission had failed.
To compound the German’s problems, America declared war against them and their allies in April 1917. However, as they had only a small army, they had to recruit and train nearly three million men. By the end of the year the Americans began to send soldiers in sufficient quantity to make a difference. However, as if to counterbalance this, the Russians had capitulated after their revolution, making peace with the Germans. This had the effect of effectively releasing the thousands of soldiers who were no longer required on the Eastern front.
Having spent eight months living as Sabine, William was not really comfortable to be himself again. However, neither was he comfortable leading a double life involving deceit and pretence. He knew that he could no longer switch back and forth. His sanity couldn’t take it. As much as he felt at home as a female, he knew that he could not realistically expect to be able to do so. Society did not view his condition favourably and there was no medical avenue that would permit him to alter what or who he was.
In short, he determined that as he was born to be William Knox, so he would remain as William Knox until his death.
The Narrator, the retired Rev. Gerald Davidson was originally given the Journals by a young American woman called Kerry-Anne Phillips who just happened to knock on his door and announce that she had lived before, as William Knox. Initially somewhat sceptical, he is convinced of her story when she produces irrefutable evidence that she had indeed lived before, and he recognises that inside she retains much of his old friend’s strength of character and mental agility.
Eager to discover the contents of the rest of the journals, Gerald and Mary embark on a cruise, during which he has ample time to inwardly digest the intriguing chronicles. The culmination of the trip is to be a brief visit with Kerry-Anne and her family in California, an event for which Gerald can hardly wait.

But a good cry as well. This is the second book in the William Knox story, and yes, I cried through much of both books - but the last few chapters of this book were nearly more than I could bear. Will's constant battle with his gender dysphoria, his life with his wife Hattie and how they became each other's salvation, and then his loss of his son and his love Hattie, reminded me too much of my life long struggles.
Tanya, you really got me with this one. Somehow, you managed to read my thoughts and put them on paper - even to the fact that the only thing that has kept me sane over the many long years has been my love of my wife and my beautiful children. I can't even begin to imagine what I would do if I lost them, but I can only think that like William I would be contemplating ending my suffering. I have been there already, and they are all that has saved me. Without them, I can only hope that like William I too would find a reason to keep going.

A Wedding and Two Wars The Knox Journals Book 2 eBook Tanya Allan Reviews
This trilogy is a unique history lesson, starting before WW1, and ending with modern times.
Tanya does it again !
Tanya Allen, has the ability to tell a complete story, so many of her books have grabbed my interest so hard that I found them very hard to put down. This Knox Journals not only did this again, but having it being told from the perspective of someone actually reading the journals, and his in-ability to put them down was brilliant. I believe I have read every book you have published. Keep up the good work.
Both William Knox Books were great could not stop Reading them am awaiting Book 3 can not wait for it and Read it.
A Wedding and Two Wars brings a touchable, personal/social experience to me as a reader! Tanya's writing touches the lives of families and communities during the war years and I find myself sharing news of devastating family tragedies and delightful celebrations. Intimate moments between her protagonists and their families are beautifully drawn and bring me to tears. Tanya has also researched backgrounds of decisions made by European political and military participants and provides an almost touchable sense of being there, of moving between north America and Europe! (Better than any movie!) So many veterans and families affected by WWI and WWII have kept these traumatic, personal experiences under wraps and the Knox Journals opens the door to intimate, personal life-changing moments during those years. This book is a complex, multi-level tour-de-force! Thanks Tanya.
The Knox's Journal books (Volume 1 & 2) encompass a good story. The characters are vivid and the story moves along. I believe there is a third volume that is due that should complete the story. The subject is unusual but then again Tanya Allan actually writes stories with characters and plots, not just sex. I honestly think their her stories could in many cases transfer into the main stream without any trouble to an adult reader.
An interesting story with a nice introduction to the possibility that there is a bit of reincarnation going on. Gerald and Kerry allow one to learn present Will/Sabine as a true potential through journals written long ago and returned when Will did as Kerry.
I really enjoyed this book. I just have one problem, where is the next one? This book does actually end with closure but Tanya threw in an epilogue that states a sequel called New Beginnings was to follow. Argh, I want it! Lol!
